LEARNING THROUGH MOVING... MOVING THROUGH LEARNING
Our speaker this month will be telling us – and perhaps showing us ways of enhancing movement skills and awareness for groups and individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. Why is this important? A body that moves well with ease and grace not only feels good but looks good. In all areas of business today, the impression we create can be of paramount importance. How we stand and move our bodies makes up a large part of this impression and also impacts on our health and energy.
Alastair Greetham has worked in Orthopaedic rehabilitation and sports conditioning for nearly 30 years. His early experience was with the military, where he spent 12 years working with individuals who needed to be coached back to high levels of fitness. His experience draws from all the major movement-training systems currently in use worldwide. For the last seven years he has been an international trainer for a movement training and rehabilitation company based in the US and has worked extensively in Europe, America and Australasia. Whilst helping people back to normal fitness, it was noticed that other activities would show improvement. Many noticed improved sporting performance and others began to say they looked much better. After one well-known trainer received help for back pain using movement oriented techniques, his students noticed a major difference in how he appeared on stage. He also noticed that he felt more energy with less effort. It was through this connection that prompted Alistair to become an advanced trainer working on physical issues and also a movement coach on presentation skills courses for the public and in business.
So what is this about? Enhanced awareness of the way we function promotes better control and management of that function. The better and more accurate the feedback we get through our bodies, the greater is the potential for enhancing the way we move. Unconscious processes such as emotions and previously learned patterns are addressed as well as motivation. These unconscious patterns are found in our every-day language when we describe each other as uptight, laid back, bowed down, etc. Learning is primarily experiential with cognitive reinforcement to develop conscious awareness. The coaching model is used with individuals to promote self-directed learning and the work is conducted with a mix of group and individual activities tailored to the situation or person and designed to enhance awareness and communication within the individual.
Alastair is a Master Practitioner and Trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming with special interest in communication and Accelerated Learning. Allying this with his background in movement training he has developed strategies for creating change in a fun but effective manner and which can enhance any training or gymwork being undertaken. The work is generic so is useful in almost any context. Sports performance, presentation skills and general health issues are all areas that can benefit.
